What exactly are jazz charts?

Q. There's a contest at my school for music and with the original composition a score or a jazz chart must me submitted. I'm assuming it's just a record of the chords used in the composition(not too in depth) and thats only if it's a jazz composition.

A. "chart" is musician slang for "sheet music"

Typically a jazz chart is a "lead sheet" that shows the melody and chords in concert pitch, but it could also be a complete arrangement with written-out parts transposed for every instrument in a jazz band; i.e. trumpet parts transposed for Bb trumpet, Sax parts in Eb and Bb, piano/bass/guitar in concert key,and a percussion chart that notates the drum kit parts.

Original Question

What's the difference between a jazz chart and jazz song?
Q. If I'm asked what charts you're playing, does it just mean songs?

A. A jazz song is just that, the title of a particular tune. You could be referring to a piece of sheet music, a recording or just the name. The term "tune" is synonymous with song.

A jazz chart is an arrangement. The arrangement could be as simple as a lead sheet with chord symbols (one staff or piano staff with notation, chords and sometimes lyrics), or it might be an orchestration for 18 piece jazz band or sextet.

For example, Quincy Jones wrote a great chart (arrangement) of the song, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, for the Count Basie band.

Original Question

Jazz songs for piano?
Q. Does anybody know of some nice jazz/swing/blues songs for the piano? Preferably slow paced but it doesnt really matter :) thanks

A. You can find the jazz charts for any jazz song out there. Lead sheets are very friendly (if you know your chords). Here are a few to start out with:
Moonlight Serenade
Take the A Train
That Old Feeling
In a Sentimental Mood
Almost Like Being in Love
Blue Moon
Just Squeeze Me
Check out those lead sheet books. If you can find some packed with charts, you can really learn bunches, and improvise easily on bunches.
