Q. I want to learn how to play jazz piano chords?
A. If you know how to play piano chords well, jazz chords are an easy transition. Jazz chords are basic chord structures that have slight changes to alter the sound. For example, take a C7 Major chord. Now instead of playing a B, play a Bb. You're now playing a regular C7...a dominant chord that's very common in jazz. Other common changes are C9 or a D on top....C,b5 or playing a Gb instead of G...the list goes on. There are many books to help you with this process. Go to the local music shop or look online. My favorite site for this is wwbw.com.
Figure out piano/guitar chord from bassline?
Q. I write jazz songs for my school jazz combo. I was wondering how you would figure out the chords from the bass line. I need this because we just added a guitar player who needs chords. I have the bass line already done, I just want to know how you can get the chords from that. It would also be nice in order to help our piano player, who plays chords better than notes.
A. If you are composing the songs, then you should have the harmonies (chords) already defined.
If you've written the bass line without chord changes in mind, then you may or may not have outlined the chords with the bass notes.
Here's what I would suggest - play the melody line on the piano, and see what chords match up with the melody. Then try the chords against the bassline that you've written.
