Original Question

scale applications??
Q. im learning exotic scales such as the hungarian minor, kumoi, harmonic major, etc. how can i apply these? what chords do these scales work well over? thanks!

A. The simplest answer is that you take the notes from the scale and see what chords you can make - those are the chords you can use.

For instance - C major pentatonic is C D E G A C.

Off the top of my head, I can make Cmaj, Dsus2, Dsus4, Gsus2, Gsus4, Am, Asus4. So I can use the C major pentatonic scale over any of these chords without causing dissonance.

I've included a link to the hungarian minor scale on wikipedia below, it has a list of chords that you can derive, using this method. Some of them are pretty odd... you may want to spend some time on a piano or within a MIDI composition program (or just comping 'em out on a guitar, of course) to experiment with them and figure out how to use them (ie, I have no idea how to use an Eb+ off the top of my head - I'd have to play around with it first).

So, some knowledge of chord construction will come in very handy.

Another relatively simple example is the Japanese scale...

1 2 4 5 b6 in C that's C D F G Ab

so Csus2, Csus4, Cm6no5, Ddim, Fsus2, Fm, Gsus4, etc.

Gotta love those sus chords....

There are ways to take them further, but every note that you add will change the overall mood/tone/texture of your work, and may move it away from how "exotic" it is.
