Q. I am a piano player but I have been asked to play the organ for my church. I was just hoping there was a way to make it sound fuller or if there was a swich you can push for a fuller rich sound.
A. I am also a pianist who played organ for a church for 19 years. I did learn to use pedals to an extent. There is not * a switch you push* - you need to learn registration, and how it applies to YOUR pipe organ, to hide that fact that you have no pedal skill. Yes, you can play some straight-up hymns with no pedal - and just add one note at the final chord. And yes, there are volumes compiled of works of organ, no pedal. But until you learn to play pedals, you are at a disadvantage. No, you just do not *step* on them - learn some technique. I do not know if you are capable of teaching this to yourself - call a good organ teacher, and see where that takes you. There is a HUGE demand in many place for qualified organists - much more so than pianists - so learning these skills will increase your employ-ability. I must turn down 6 organ jobs every single year - and I am no thrill on the organ, merely functional. Someone with a DEGREE or more training in organ? As soon as you got your name out there, your phone would ring. Good luck!
What are good christmas songs for a piano player/singer like me?
Q. I'm entering a talent show on sunday and i need a song!!! I'm a low singer and on the piano i play by chords (not sheet music) i want to sing something popular but with christmas. I wanted to sing "Welcome Christmas" from the grinch but i can't find the chords.
Any help would be awesome!
Nick
A. You need a fake book. A fake book, has just the chords, and doesn't really require you to read music. There are some Christmas examples below. However, that particular song from the Grinch, I was not able to find.
Where do I start to become a jazz piano player?
Q. I know how to read music by plying the trumpet when I was younger. Now I'm trying to learn piano on my own. Any ideas?
A. I agree - chords and scales. learn them in all 12 keys, all modes, all inversions.
You already know the treble clef from trumpet, but piano requires learning the bass clef too. I would start with any basic adult piano lesson book - Alfred, Bastien, Faber and Faber.
The Faber and Faber series includes a lot of supplementary pop and jazz music, so it would be a good choice for you. Don't skimp on the theory books either.
