Q. I would like to be able to play any song from the Real Book.
I know how to read notes and time measures and count time. I can play piano well enough, I've been playing piano for four years. The problem is I never learned scales or chords or keys.
When I looked at the real book sheet music, I only saw the right hand music and did not know what to do with my left hand. What do need to learn in order to be able to play jazz music from the real book?
A. The melody line and the chord symbols you find in the "Real Book" are not enough to show really how to play a jazz piano. You never play that melody line on the piano.

People who work well with writing harmony and know about chords?
Q. I'm a songwriter and I'm trying to write a tune for a piece I've been developing. Do you know any chords and chord progressions that fit well for a hip hop/R&B song? I haven't set a specific key. Just something very smooth and oldschool-sounding. Like a Mariah Carey or Beyonce song. By chords I don't necessarily mean guitar or piano chords, but chords that are sung for a three-part or four-part song. Thanks :)
A. Chords are chords... there's nothing different about the chords you would play on a piano and those you would arrange for a vocal group to sing.
If you're looking for ideas, see if you can figure out the arrangements for some songs that have the style you're going for. If you can get your hands on a transcription, or even a lead sheet, that's even better.
Piano chords to go with alto sax piece?
Q. I'm playing colours of the wind on alto sax in the C Major key... I need three piano chords that i can play to accompany this, but I need help.
A. Here are the chords for "Colors Of The Wind" by Vaness Williams:
http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/v/vanessa_williams/colors_of_the_wind_crd.htm
As key for piano or guitar here is shown the key C major:
C, Am, C, Em, Am, F, Dm, G, Am.
If you play that correct chords for piano, the alto sax has to play the melody chords:
A, F#m, A, C#m, F#m, D, Bm, E, F#m.
If you play the melody on alto sax in the key of C major, the piano has to play the chords:
Eb, Cm, Eb, Gm, Cm, Ab, Fm, Bb, Cm.
