Q. I know how to write melody for any songs, but sometimes i have problem getting the chords and particularly I dont know when to use Minor chords, Diminished, Aug, C7, C9. I dont know the difference.
A. Here is the chords for a major scale and it's relative minor (Cmaj/Amin)
Cmaj7,Dm7,Em7,Fmaj7,G7,Am7,Bm7b5
This is a good place to start. Good luck
How do you compose a song???
Q. I'm intermediate at piano and I really want to compose a song for my grandma, because she loves me playing for her so I wanted to compose a song just for her.
A. A million dollar question :-). Some start by thinking of a basic melody or riff, others write the lyrics first, and some go for chords as a beginning and create the melody to fit them. A good start would be to define what kind of song you want? Will it be sung by singer (you?) or just played on the piano?
Sit by the piano and start playing around. Play some structures you know, but to try to variate and be creative. See if anything comes out. The deal here is to find a lead, something to start with. After that, you can start developing it. It could be a tune that would be fitted into the chorus, into the verse or even a solo part. Maybe it's just a "harmonical progression" that sounds nice (like Am > G > Fmaj7 > G). Most of the songs in the world are made out of simple harmonical progressions like this.
Good luck!
How to play from a fake book?
Q. Any tips would be nice. I play piano. I see different ways to play it too like( Med. Swing, Calypso,, etc..........) How do you play it in these ways? I've been classically trained for a long time. But how to make the transition to jazz?
I also noticed that the players don't use a lot of pedal on their songs.
A. Well, since you have the melody, I'm guessing you need to learn your left hand, right?
A good way to start is by striding your left hand.
Let's say the Chord symbol is CMaj7.
You'd start by playing C2 then play your guide tones (The 3rd and 7th note in the scale of your chord symbol) So C major would be E and B.
So you'd stride your hand back and forth from C, to EB. When the chord symbol changes, change your notes. FMaj7. You'd play F2 then AE
Also make sure to keep your guide tone range between C3, and G4.
Hope that helps a bit.
