How do you know what chords to use when composing a song?

Q. I am composing a song for the piano and when I was in music in high school my teacher gave me a list of which chords (i.e. tonic, dominent, sub-dominent, etc.) to go with each degree of the scale. If anyone could write those out for me that would be great!

A. Let's say you are composing a song in the key of C major. The Tonic chord (or the I chord) would be a C major chord, which would be made up of the notes C-E-G. The rest of the chords are as follows:

Supertonic (ii) = D minor (Dm) D-F-A
Mediant (iii) = E minor (Em) E-G-B
Subdominant (IV)= F major (F) F-A-C
Dominant (V) = G major (G) G-B-D
Submediant (vi) = A minor (Am) A-C-E
Leading Tone (vii°) = B diminished (B dim) B-D-F
Tonic (I) = C major (C) C-E-G

Those are the chords that belong to the key of C major. Play all of them starting on the I chord and ending on the next I chord, which will be an octave higher. This will give you a sense of belonging to that key. Uppercase Roman numerals indicate major chords and lowercase Roman numerals indicate minor chords. vii° (the chord built on the 7th note of the scale) is diminished. Chords are abbreviated according to what they are. Simple major chords, like the C chord, do not need an abbreviation, but minors and diminished chords need them. So, when you play the chords, you'll go in this order:

C----Dm----Em----F----G----Am----B dim----C

This pattern remains the same for ALL major keys. You will ALWAYS have 3 major, 3 minor and 1 diminished chord. Also, you can do a basic composition by using just the I, IV, and V chords--which are called the primary chords. You can make the best song with just these 3 chords. Many famous composers started with just these 3 chords, but they added the rest as they became more experienced. In minor keys, i, iv, and v will be minor and ii° will be diminished. Quickly, we can take a look at the RELATIVE MINOR of C major, which is A minor. (Because C major and A minor have the same key signature, which is no sharps or flats, they are called RELATIVES.)

Try the A minor scale chords:
Am----B dim----C----Dm----Em----F----G----Am

There are 3 types of minor scale. You just tried the NATURAL minor scale. The HARMONIC minor scale has a raised 7th note of the scale (G# in the case of A minor), so that means the the III chord would become AUGMENTED, the V chord MAJOR, and the VII chord would become DIMINISHED because of the sharp.

Am----B dim----C aug----Dm----E----F----G#dim----Am

C aug = C-E-G#
G# dim = G#-B-D

The MELODIC MINOR SCALE raises BOTH the 6th AND 7th notes of the scale as you ascend, but as you descend, you play the natural minor scale.

Ascending: A-B-C-D-E-F#-G#-A
Descending: A-G-F-E-D-C-B-A

Am----Bm----C aug----D----E----F#dim----G#dim----Am

F# dim = F#-A-C

Now that you have all the info on basic composition, you can write your song. You don't have to use the chords belonging to a key if you don't want to--you can use chords from other keys if you like. But for now, you can do some basic composing. Remember that the above info was based on the key of C major and A minor. But for all major keys you will always have I, ii, iii IV, V, vi, and vii°. The pattern for the minor keys will be dependent upon which minor scale you choose to work with (natural, harmonic, melodic).

This concludes another exciting lesson from The Tramp's Guide to Basic Music Composition. Enjoy your song. Who knows--you might one day write that big song that will be known far and wide! God bless.
