I want to learn to read music and play to play the piano?

Q. I've played some songs on my keyboard learning on youtube videos. But I want to make my own music, I want to learn how to do so. I know reading music is the first step.

A. Nothing can substitute for learning to read music, and it will help you be more specific when you write out your music. Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course is a great book to try.

However, I also recommend picking up a piano chord chart and finding a book or online source that lays out some simple chord progressions (a fancy way of saying the order you play the chords). You can then write your music and just write the chord names over your words, like they do in many guitar tabs. You can also just try mixing and matching different chords until you find a combination you like.

It isn't a perfect solution, and again you really should learn to read and write musical notes too, but it will give you fast start to writing your own music.

Original Question

Do you think I could learn to play the guitar?
Q. I really want to learn how to play the guitar. I only want to know the basics andstuff so I can make up songs to play =] I think I could learn online without a teacher but do you think I could? I played piano for like 4 years so I don't think the music signs and stuff should be a problem.

A. it should be easy, i learned from a book that had chord charts in it. all you need is an understanding of music theory (how to change a major chord to a minor/7th, ect) and the three or four basic chord patterns. Especially if you already know about music. Playing melodies and this will just come from know the scales which you can find online along with the chord charts.

Original Question

Is it hard to teach yourself to play the guitar?
Q. Im 15, i really want to learn to play the guitar, i can already read music and can play Electric Piano?
Thank you :)
Haha i get what you're all saying. I don't want to join a band ;-D just i'm really into music and i would love to play, i taught myself electric piano, i was just wandering how much different it was really :)

A. I've been teaching guitar for 30 years. It's really not that difficult to learn to play it, but you have to either have a teacher or a good plan for how you're going to learn to play it. Just hopping on Youtube and searching for lessons is not the way to do it. Honestly, some people pick it up pretty easily and others struggle. Since you appear to have some musical aptitude I think you should have an easy enough time learning. I'd suggest you get book 1 of a good lesson series like Mel Bay or Hal Leonard and start at the beginning. Since you already read music you'll have an advantage.

You'll need to learn the open strings and how to tune the guitar, then the notes on all the strings. Then the major and minor scales (all up the neck, not just in 1 position!). Then, if you haven't already studied chord theory do that. That will teach you which cords go together in which keys and how to do various voicings and stuff. That's really the best way to learn to play guitar.

You can just go online and find chord charts and tabs that tell you what finger to put on what string without really even having to understand music or how to play guitar, but that's not going to make you much of a guitarist.
