Can i learn to play the piano by using a keyboard?

Q. I am thinking of playing the piano because it runs in my family, and I cannot afford a piano right now. I have 200 dollars so I am going to probably buy a 61 Key Keyboard. I am willing to teach myself and for about 1-2 hours, and Im used to stretching my fingers with playing the guitar alot. Basically, how can i learn with a 61 keyboard? And are there any books or games or lessons online or to buy at a store that you reccommend?

A. Of course-I actually started playing the keyboard before playing piano.

But I should warn you there are 2 different styles-1 is called keyboard-accompaniment, where your left hand plays chords which control the background music played by the keyboard, and your right hand plays the melody.

But of course normal pianos don't do this!

The other style is where you play melodies with both hands, which is the same as a normal piano.

I started playing keyboard-accompaniment before I learned piano, using The Complete Keyboard Player series, but if you only want to aim for piano then you should learn to play melodies with both hands. I took me a while to adjust to piano because of my keyboard style, but I did enjoy playing both styles.

You should also be aware of the fact that keyboard keys are a lot lighter than piano keys, and you should play with something called "touch response", which means the harder you hit a key, the louder it is. Don't keep this turned off as you will find it difficult to adjust to piano when you come to it.

If you go to any music store you will find lots of books that can teach you.
Read through them and only buy ones you feel you will understand, i.e. easy ones. to begin with.

Original Question

Is it possible to learn how to play the keyboard/piano at home?
Q. I learned how to play the guitar at home but would it be possible to learn playing the piano as well? Most people would say that piano would be way too complex for a computer to teach...I haven't bought a keyboard just yet

Just wanted to know if my plan of purchasing one could go somewhere.... (I've got the dedication to learn it as well)

A. Yes. Most keyboards have the note names below all of the keys and you could purchase a book with it. You could also learn some chords and songs online on YouTube or a music site that make things very simple. I would reccomend purchasing a music book along with the keyboard though, so you know what you're doing. I play the piano and I learned this past summer without a book ani know all the notes and chords and most of my knowledge was from YouTube and I'm pretty fluent. So yes, it is completely possible if you work hard :)

Original Question

Best way to start learning to play piano/keyboard on your own.?
Q. I'm a beginner and want to learn to play through books and dvd. Is this better than a teacher? Any tips?

A. I've started out as learning it on my own. However I was only able to play both hands as long as the bass were just chords that changed every measure. So then I got a piano teacher. It's been around say 4 years since I've been playing, and all I can tell you is that it takes loads of practice, patience, and effort. You may end up learning the same thing for weeks. And remember, when you're learning something, please make and effort to have it perfect before you move on.

Now when you ask if this is better than a teacher, I guess money wise yeah. However, learning yourself may take a lot more time but don't give up!

I'm glad you're taking an interest in the piano. Anyways, just make sure you have loads of patience.
First of all, you want to learn how to read notes obviously. You want to learn the treble clef and the bass.
In addition, you should also learn how to keep a steady beat. Most song have a 4/4 rhythm which means there are 4 beats in every bar.

This is an excellent site that shows basic note reading and rhythm: http://datadragon.com/education/reading/

Note reading and rhythm may not come to you at first but gradually as you learn to play more songs, you'll being more better at it. Even at 4 years, I'm still not perfect at rhythm not note reading.

This site over here has a "collection" of sheet musics with super super super basic notes you can read: http://www.yokewong.net/EasyNotes.html

Now for your first book, I highly recommend : http://www.amazon.com/Joy-First-Year-Piano/dp/0825680131/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240542108&sr=8-11

You should also do your own research and find some more Denes Agay books. those books were my first and they helped a lot.

also try this book: http://www.amazon.com/Technic-Fun-Hirschberg/dp/0757922597/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1240542853&sr=1-3

As you progress you might want to find sheet music of your own tastes online. You may want to make improvisions on it so they can be easier for you to play.

You may also want to take a look at sonatinas after 2-3 years.
Anyways, find whatever you need over the internet... they have loads of stuff (: and find other books. Try not to work on more than 2-3 books at a time and keep at learning speed at your own pace.
