what are my chances of making it as a professional musician?

Q. ive been playing electric guitar for a little over 2 years. i play almost everything. metal, blues, and rock mainly. just about everybody in my family are musicians. piano, organ and guitar mostly. my second cousin is kinda big in his state.
and i practice nonestop, litteraly almost 6 hours a day and i have everything pretty much down, i would rate myself 8/10 at guitar
i have never played for the public. just at family reunions

A. Hello. I`m not here to put you down nor discourage you but you need to understand something. 2 years??/ Play everything?? No way. If you are practicing like you have stated then you are on the road to success. Family members are the worst critics. I have allowed my family to fool me into thinking I was something I wasn't when I had been playing about 2 years as well. I was gigging in 3 years and still didn't know anything. The guitar is a beast to master. For instance, Can you fluently play through chords such as C Maj7, D6, Am6, Am7, Dm7, Dm7+9, G13, G7?? If I say this song is in the key of G, its a 1,4,5 with a flattened 3rd and modulates chromatically after the second chorus do you know what to do?? Do you finger pick any songs fluently such as "Fire and Rain"? How many styles have you incorporated in your playing? Can you solo note for note such solos as those done by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley, etc.etc.? Like I have stated, Im not here to hurt you and I love hearing that someone is putting in the time but two years is not close to the experience needed to say things you have stated here. Now this doesn't mean the answer is no to your question. It simply means that you need to keep up the good work your doing. It also isn`t necessary to play SRV solos. I see alot of these pop stars who suck. The point is that you need to get experience actually playing the guitar. If you are focusing on being a solo player then it takes time, it also takes time for rhythm players if you want to be a solid versatile player. Just slow down a bit and keep practicing. I`ve played over 20 years and I am a pretty good guitar player but even though I can cover SRV, Zac Wild, Randy Rhodes, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Warren Haynes, Derek trucks, etc.etc.etc.etc. I still practice everyday for hours. Its a passion. To, "MAKE IT" doesn`t always take all of this. Like I said, there are alot of famous players out there that I could smoke any day of the week. It`s to do with who you know, who you end up playing with, etc.etc. So making it covers a wide range of aspects. Make it as a solo guitarist or make it as a member of a band, or make it as etc., etc. regardless, keep up the practice because NOBODY knows it all on the guitar. It is a never ending journey. Oh yeah and one more thing,...if you are practicing as stated and progressing as such you will have people saying things like "He`s a natural" or "Its in his blood",...To me that is offensive. Its like they are taking away the fact of all the countless hours I had worked so hard to get where I was with my ability. So don`t take that as a compliment from other players. tell them you worked for it. I really can relate with you because I did the same thing you are doing. I practiced constantly. My fingers bled, I fell to sleep with my guitar, woke up with it, etc.etc. The thing is,....I still do. And because I still do I can hang with the best of them, and I can gig anywhere I live anywhere in the world . Love the positive attitude dude. Keep up the good work. Good luck!

Original Question

Please tell me the piano chord I should play with this bit of melody?
Q. The beginning of "Girl from Ipanema." "Tall and tan and you-ng and lovely the" ....My right hand is playing....F D D C F F D D D C.
Thanks.

A. Some thoughts that occurred to me...

Dm - F - Dm - C
Dm7
Bb - F

Of course, I don't remember how the song goes, so the other answerer is probably right. =)

Original Question

I need a combination of piano chords that sound sad. Any ideas?
Q. I'm trying to compose a song and I would like to use a lot of minor chords. However, I'm a little stuck. I've got a bad case of writer's block and I'm looking for some assistance. I don't need a melody, just a list of possible combinations of chords that I could use to make the song sound sad and/or dark. Any ideas??

A. I don't know what key you're in, so I'll give you some in the key of Am, which has no sharps or flats (unless you add some). See if any of these work for you.

If you want the chords in another key, use

http://www.autotransposer.com/transpose/

It's easy and free. (You'll need to remove the bar lines because the transposer doesn't understand them.)
