Original Question

What are some good songs to play on Acoustic guitar?
Q. I'm 13 and I have a pretty good range (for singing) and I would say i'm and intermediate guitar player and I really want a good song to sing and play guitar. I have been searching for hours and still can't find anything suitable for what I'm look for. I want something slow and soft that's is really pretty, but not too slow and soft of you know what I mean ha ha. Thnx! : )
yes, I am intermediate for a fact. :)

A. how good are you, because that can determine alot. im more so an intermediate so i play alotta mayer, opeth (their acoustic stuff mostly), jazz, or anything that has alot of moving lines (especially if they are fingerpicked). you really need to specify what you mean by intermediate players, because I know alot of beginners who consider themselves intermediate but in all reality they are still beginners.

if you arent that good try:

angel, go on, banana pancakes, better together, or breakdown - jack johnson

pretty much any slow green day song

any nirvana song

taylor swift (which u'd never catch me playing)
_______________________________________________
if you're intermediate (a good pretty good control and can play fluently):

barely breathing - duncan sheik

stairway to heaven - led zeppelin (this isnt a beginner song, idk y ppl think so but its not. if you intend to play it super tight/clean and musical, u cant b a beginner)

blackbird - beatles (again if you want it super tight, u need experience for this song. or its sound like mud)

daughters, who says, free fallin, stop this train, slow dancing in a burning room, etc - john mayer

gravedigger, crash into me- dave matthews

fly me to the moon - various artist

autumn leaves - various artist

all of me - various artist

lullaby of birdland - ella fitzgerald's is really hard to sing, other remade the song w/ vocals too

my funny valentine (is really slow, but the chords arent easy, and its a vocal feature)

bella luna, coyotes, hey love - jason mraz (you need great control over your voice if you intend on
playing mraz and only play his live version; i hate his studio version, except for bella luna)

if u like darker songs try:
still day beneath the sun-opeth

here are some other intermediate songs that are just so fun u really dont need a vocal line:

going home- shiro sagisu

laser speed-between the buried and me
_______________________________________________

if ur quite an accomplish guitarist try (this doesnt mean ur an expert or whateva, just that u can sing and play more complex song and chord changes):

how insensitive

neon - mayer (i can play this but i cant sing a play this song for the life of me)

satellite - dave matthews (same as neon)

one song that is crazy hard no vocals though, but just one of those songs:
angelina - tommy emmanuel

I suggest you get a "The Real Vocal Book" which is like $15-30 depending which edition you get or voicing and where you get it. This book is what pro jazz band use at gigs, jazz vocal majors (like one of my best friends), and those who want to play harder, mature, and beautiful songs (the songs my funny valentine, all of me, autumn leaves, how insensitive, and fly me to the moon are all within the vocal real book) This book will last you all you musical life as long as you dont destroy the book. Its made to b played by yourself on piano or guitar, but since the real book is so popular it comes in different keys for other instruments (i have a Eb, Bb, and C real book, my friend has the Vocal real book which is also in C). You probably can find a virtual copy online somewhere like on 4shared.com or wateva filesharing site u use, but its kinda illegal but thats a thing of virtues, but so u know, its there.....

note: sorry if there r grammar issues, im a musician, lol

Original Question

What is an all around good acoustic/classical guitar for a lefty?
Q. The cheaper the better, but Id be willing to put a little more money if it makes that much of a difference in quality. Post website links if possible and references from Guitar Center :) Cutaways are nice too

A. If you already know how to play and have learned lefty, my regrets. You'll forever be limited in your selection of guitars. If you haven't learned to play yet, I urge you to learn on a standard (right-hand) guitar. The fact that you're left handed is of no consequence. Guitars...like pianos and other instruments require equal duty from both of your hands. I realize that the few people who play left handed do stand out, but they are in the minority. Left handed people can and do learn on regular guitars. In fact, you may be at an advantage in the beginning...just think of all the right handed players struggling to make their clumsy left hands form chords!

Guitar tab, chord diagrams, and instructional material is all backwards for left handed players. Left hand players can't play other people's guitars or try them out in stores....most have to be special ordered. If you check out some manufacturers websites, you'll find that only a few models are made left handed. Musicians Friend carries 137 different models of nylon stringed classical guitars...and only 4 left handed. Sort of limits your choices doesn't it? So there are a lot of good reasons to learn on a standard guitar...and none at all for a left hand guitar.

The other thing you need to decide on is if you want a steel or nylon stringed guitar. Classical guitars are nylon stringed and that's what you mentioned in your question. They're usually used for Classical, Spanish and Flamenco music. If you plan on playing Rock, Pop, Folk, Blues, etc, get a steel stringed guitar.

Look for Yamaha, Aria, Ibanez, or Epiphone guitars. They generally make decent guitars for a reasonable price. I can't advise you on nylon stringed guitars, for steel strings I wouldn't get anything less expensive that this: http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Epiphone-PR150-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=512457 In the low end price range, a little more money can make a big difference so don't be afraid to look at something nicer.

You're also best buying at a local store....they are well aware of the internet and usually match the online prices. That way, you can actually see what you're getting and try out a few for feel and size. Bring along a guitar playing friend or have the salesperson play them so you can hear the differences.
