Learning piano chords.?

Q. Hi, so I just got a piano for my birthday and would like to learn how to play. I used to take piano lessons . I took them for 3 years when I was really young and only remember the very basics. (such as hand positions) I would like to learn to play by ear. I already know how to read music because I've been playing the oboe for 3 years now. I just find it hard to read both lines at the same time as I am used to reading one, plus playing by ear gives you mad cool points. So anyone know any sites or videos where I can learn the chords? Thanks for your advice.

A. I am a bass player. But I used the piano to help with my theory. However I'm not going to state the obvious (I know what I'm talking about). Here's where you can go to get the absolute simple basics. Concentrate, learn, and enjoy your piano playing from now on....

Original Question

Is there a specific way or position to play piano?
Q. Ok so I learned "my heart will go on" song in piano. There is no stated position in playing the piece (C position, g position). After practicing it like 50 times I got most of it and could play it really well. My teacher thinks the other way telling me I cant play a left- handed chord with my right hand even though the key is right next to the key instead I have to curl my left hand up and move it all the way to the right pausing the music.
So my question is is she right about not being able to play a left-handed key with my right even though the piece states no position and as my strongest point is the key is right next to my right thumb......
P.S. when they way she says it is I have to move my left hand back and forth bumping into my right hand
ughh I cant type today, I hope you can understand me

A. Most of the time, the right hand plays what is on treble staff and the left hand plays what is on the bass staff. Music usually indicates if otherwise. But what some pianists have told me is that fingering is not a big deal. There isn't just one correct fingering for most of the time. If you have big hands like Rachmaninoff, you will probably take a different fingering than someone like me who has hands that can only reach a tenth. Though, you should practice so that each hand can be flexible with multiple fingerings (including odd ones). Invest much in etudes and technical exercises. Don't think it is odd for there to be left and right hand contact. It will happen. Technical exercises that a practiced right will help you control the left and right hand contact.

Good luck on your practice! Practice does amazing things!
