Is it hard to teach yourself to play the guitar?

Q. Im 15, i really want to learn to play the guitar, i can already read music and can play Electric Piano?
Thank you :)
Haha i get what you're all saying. I don't want to join a band ;-D just i'm really into music and i would love to play, i taught myself electric piano, i was just wandering how much different it was really :)

A. I've been teaching guitar for 30 years. It's really not that difficult to learn to play it, but you have to either have a teacher or a good plan for how you're going to learn to play it. Just hopping on Youtube and searching for lessons is not the way to do it. Honestly, some people pick it up pretty easily and others struggle. Since you appear to have some musical aptitude I think you should have an easy enough time learning. I'd suggest you get book 1 of a good lesson series like Mel Bay or Hal Leonard and start at the beginning. Since you already read music you'll have an advantage.

You'll need to learn the open strings and how to tune the guitar, then the notes on all the strings. Then the major and minor scales (all up the neck, not just in 1 position!). Then, if you haven't already studied chord theory do that. That will teach you which cords go together in which keys and how to do various voicings and stuff. That's really the best way to learn to play guitar.

You can just go online and find chord charts and tabs that tell you what finger to put on what string without really even having to understand music or how to play guitar, but that's not going to make you much of a guitarist.

Original Question

What Is the Proper way to writing Music ?
Q. Using intervals and scales .

A. well to start off, you need to know about music theory. There are many rules and regulations that notes and chords(intervals and scales) follow. It's like writing an essay for english class. you need to know the mechanics and proper structure of english and forming sentences. it is the same kind of technical thought pattern for writing a song for either piano or a choir. There are many chords that flow better with each other and some that don't. I play both and the piano and the flute. I have been playing for about ten years. Because of my vast knowledge and playing abliblity i know what goes together properly. But if you have a good ear and know scales and intervals degrees and even minor scales and chords.

Just start playing around. pick a key to work on and play your instrument and play what comes to you. I have made up a lot of stuff just from the top of my head. Then think, what kind of style to music would you like to write for. I have writen about five piano solos and a choral piece for graduation SAT arrangment for my high school graduation. But i had little theory knowledge, only from what i learned at my piano lessons and just what sounds right when i play it on the piano.

So listen to all kinds of music that you like, to get different styles of playing and generes of music. Also go to your local music store or visit online for books regarding how to compose or write music, they will go in more depth and detail of how to build and use the proper structure of music.

Also purchase some piano, guitar, vocal books and along with the CDs to listen and follow along. from your favortie artist to see the structure they use and the chords that go together and what kind of chords there are. I have purchased books for the Fray, Josh Groban, Jason Mraz and many film scores, like harry potter, titanic, star wars and much more. Some song out there only use three to four chords, and yet it makes the top of the charts in the music world. So if you just use three or for chords in your music don't be afriad. Just keep working and a masterpiece will come. I hope this kind of helped.

I took me a while to figure how to write music using chords. I wish you luck on what ever you plan to do!

Original Question

How, and where, can i learn chords, for a guitar-and what is the difference, of Major/Minor and 7's?
Q. So i got a guitar, almost 2 years ago. I have been playing piano for around 8 years, taking off some time this past year, and another a few years ago. But i was never able to grasp the whole minor/major thing, OR chords. So im trying to learn to play my guitar, have 2 different DVD's, but im just looking for a site online, that could help me understand chords better, and how to play them, and the difference from one type of B chord, to the next. Basicaly, do you know a REALLY good guitar help site? Sorry this was so long. Thanks!!!!

A. I'd get a chord chart - Musiciansfriend.com has them. That is the easiest way to figure out how to play any chord you want. The difference in the major/minor/7 chords has to do with the intervals between the notes in each chord. This site might help you understand the theory. http://library.thinkquest.org/15413/theory/intervals.htm

another good link with free chart:

Good luck. Having played piano is a definate help when learning a new instrument.
