Can I teach myself piano?

Q. What is a good way to teach myself piano? I have a piano at home. Can't afford lessons.
Youtube videos don't work for me cuz I have a real bad memory and I have to run back and forth from my computer and my piano...
I don't wanna play by ear though.... I can read music by the way...

A. It's definitely possible!! I teach myself songs all the time (I play flute and used to play violin, but I taught myself nonetheless). There are a few different ways you can do this.

One way is to play by ear! Pick out a song that you know, go over to your piano, and just start messing around until you start to figure it out. It will take a while, but it's all worth it in the end, right? The only thing about this is that you won't learn to read music or any technique at all, which brings me to my next idea.

Another thing you can do is go to your local music store and buy a beginning piano book. You can teach yourself to read music, which isn't so bad, and then you can learn scales, chords, the pedals, etc. A technique book is a great investment, and only cost $10, give or take a few dollars.

My last suggestion is to find a friend or relative who plays and ask them for advice. Free lessons(;

You can put these three ideas together, too. Anything you're unsure about, look it up online! Plus, I know a whole lot of websites that give you free sheet music, once you really get going. They give you the .pdf of the music and you can download it to your computer and print it out. Here's a few ideas(:

Good luck learning, you'll love it! I hope this helped(:

Original Question

piano chords?
Q. does anyone by any chance have a big picture or PDF file or something that has all the piano chords or alot of the nice basic and advanced chords do yall? ive looked all over the internet and i cant find anything. ten points goes to the first person who can get me these please. if you need to, email me files to alexdra9015@yahoo.com

thanx and god bless

A. Mark Levine's book Jazz Piano is the only place where all of the way modern jazz chords are voiced is explained. I don't think you could ever right them down in one big picture, there are too many.

It is better to understand them the way Levine breaks it down, for example, two handed chord voicings in fourths, voicings based on upper partials, etc.

Original Question

Tips for learning the piano?
Q. I've played the flute for about 9 years, but I wanted to take up the piano--so I bought a keyboard, some piano music, etc. I'm having a little trouble learning to play from piano sheet music. Could anyone offer any advice to help me understand/learn it faster?

Thanks!!

A. What you should do is make a serious attempt to play by ear. Use YouTube to study and practice fingering. Learn and practice your 12 major scales. Learn to construct the triad (3-note) major, minor, diminished, and augmented chords. With concentrated effort you can accomplish this within a month. Learn to play using the number system instead of chord names.

Download this PDF book and read it at the piano http://www.keyeduppiano.com/dl687/PlayByEarDiscovery.pdf

Then go here and watch the videos: http://www.keyeduppiano.com/

If you can grasp the concepts obtained from this source, practice them, get out and hook up with other musicians so you can apply the knowledge in the real world, then go for expanding your knowledge of music theory. If you have a real passion and desire to play you'll be surprised how fast you learn.
.
Best of luck
