What are some good Piano exercises for beginners?

Q. I just bought a synthesizing keyboard and would like to know a few good exercises for a beginner.

A. Practicing scales and learning the chords are a really good way to begin. With scales, you want to be able to play smoothly but with chords, you want to be able to identify the different ones that there are. Also have some one call out a key and you have to find it on the piano is a really good way to learn the different keys. Also practicing the scales and chords with both left and right hands.

Original Question

Where can I listen to piano chords on the computer?
Q. For example, the computer plays a chord, and then I try to name all the notes in the chord. Is there a software/online program that's like this?

A. http://www.mhhe.com/et7

On this site, you can see ear training exercises and download the mp3's so that you can practice with them. Some of the earlier exercises may not be what you are looking for, but scroll through and you should find some with chords. Even if the exercise isn't meant specifically for you to name each note of the chord, there are several which play chords for you. And the chords are written out in the PDF's (that you can download) so you can check your answers.

Hope this helps you!!! :)

Original Question

Practice to play piano chords?
Q. I teach myself keyboard and have the most trouble when I need to play chords more than 3 notes at a time. Like I'm learning Chopin's prelude in c minor - this is so hard when it's chords like that. Can anyone please recommend exercises I can do to help? Thank you.

A. There are several technical difficulties happening all at once in the c-minor prelude. Try eliminating the inner notes of the octave chords first until you are comfortable with the octaves and big stretches. For example, for the first RH chord G-C-Eb-G, just play the G as an octave and play the LH as is. Gradually add the inner notes. I suspect you also need some finger stretching exercises. I recommend Hanon #20, 49, 58. Try them in both c and c minor.
