Piano Jazz Chord Trouble?

Q. I've been playing classical piano for ten years now, so i'm pretty good. i decided to try out for amis honour jazz band this year, but i dont understand a thing about the chord notation on the audition sheets. can anyone tell me what these mean, coz i'm not used to reading jazz music. (i know the basics like c minor chord and major sevenths and augumented fifths and stuff so if you can explain in those terms please)

C-
F-
D â
G7+9
Bb7
Bb7+
Ebâ
G-
C7
C7+
Fâ
F7
Bb-
Eb7
Ab-
Db7
F#-
B7
E-
A7
D-
G7

thanks

A. C- = C minor (or an implied C minor 7th: C, Eb, G, Bb)

D â = D half-diminished (D, F, Ab, C)

G7+9 = G seventh, sharp nine (G, B, D, F, A#)

Bb7+ = Bb7 with a raised 5th (Bb, D, F#, Ab)

Ebâ = Eb major seventh (Eb, G, Bb, D)

(the others can be figured out from these)

These are just the bare bones of whatever it is you'll actually be playing on the piano. Better have someone show you some comping patterns! Here's a start: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IqjAq81ok00 (then follow the links)

How soon is the audition?

Original Question

What is a G# MINOR piano chord?
Q. I am taking music classes an on my key chart they have a G#M. I can not find this chord, I need the root and the 1st & 2nd inversion.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

A. Root position: G# B D#

1st inversion: B D# G#

2nd inversion: D# G# B

A good theory site is:

If you are studying music an excellent book to have is "The Bradley Book of Chords, Scales & Modes" by Stephen Skinner. It talks about how scales and chords are formed and then lists most every scale and chord in every key that you would probably ever want to know about.

Hope this will help you.

Original Question

Give me a basis or chords to write a minor piano song?
Q. Okay, so, its Christmas soon and I wanna write my bf a short song on piano. I really don't know how to start or how to write a good melody line or anything!! >.<
Can someone pleaseee give me some tips or a few minor-ish chords that will go together?
Thanks a bunch ^-^

A. A minor is probably easiest on piano.

A minor, D minor, E minor OR E7.

A minor is made up of A,C,E notes.
D minor is D,F,A.
E minor is E,G,B... though you could use the E7 to resolve more strongly back to A minor.
E7 is made of E, G#, B, D... working very strongly with the G# as the lowest note.

You might want to end the song with an A major chord, too: A, C#, E.
The "Picardy third" effect is a nice touch.
