Q. I have no idea what to play when I see this chord. Do I just pick one to play? If you could tell me what notes this chords consists of I would be very appreciative :)
A. You play Ab major in the right hand (Ab, C, Eb) and Bb in the left hand. The Bb is the bass (root) note, so if you are on piano, play the Bb low on the keyboard, and the Ab around the middle C area.
Anytime that you have a chord like this (where the right hand is a full step higher than the root,) it plays as a sus chord. In other words it could be written as Bb sus.
Look at all the notes from bottom to top: Bb, Ab, C, Eb.
These are essentially: The root note, the dominant 7th, the 2nd, the 4th.
The 3rd is missing. The third defines if a chord is a major, minor (or diminished.) So this Bb sus could resolve to a major chord or minor quite nicely.
Here are some other examples to try out. Try resolving them to their major or minor form for practice:
Ab/Bb - Bbmaj
C/D - Dmaj
G/F - Fmaj
A/B - Bmaj
Or minor chord examples:
F/G - Gm
E/F# - F#m
Gb/Ab - Abm
Help with piano chords?
Q. I'm fairly new to piano and I'm still learnin' what some of the chord names are. I have a pretty cool chord progression and one of the chords has the notes E - F# - A. Does anyone know the name of this chord (if it even is an actual chord).
A. By itself, my handy, dandy, chord locating software could not find it but, I know from experience that very often that is still a chord. So, if it could actually be one of the following chords with a missing note depending upon what key you are playing in:
C E F# A, would be an Am6 (if you add a D to this chord then it's a Dmaj9).
C# E F# A would be an Amaj6 or a Gb or F# minor 7th. (Gbm7 or F#m7).
So, you might try playing any of these three chords to see if they sound alright in your song.
C E F# A - (Am6)
C# E F# A - (Gbm7 or F#m7)
A C D E F# - (Dmaj9)
If those chords do not sound correct with your song, then it's an Am6 with no 3rd or (Am6 no 3)
If you are curious about how I figured this out, you might like to take a look at the rpsoft 2000 musicord - it costs less than $20 and it's well worth it. It also works for guitar chords.
how to play jazz piano chords?
Q. I want to learn how to play jazz piano chords?
A. If you know how to play piano chords well, jazz chords are an easy transition. Jazz chords are basic chord structures that have slight changes to alter the sound. For example, take a C7 Major chord. Now instead of playing a B, play a Bb. You're now playing a regular C7...a dominant chord that's very common in jazz. Other common changes are C9 or a D on top....C,b5 or playing a Gb instead of G...the list goes on. There are many books to help you with this process. Go to the local music shop or look online. My favorite site for this is wwbw.com.
