How can I learn piano chords and scales quickly and easily?

Q. I need to learn improvisational piano techniques quickly. Such as common scales ionian, dorian, lydian and such. As well as how to integrate common chords into them like major, minor, Maj7, m7, and dom7 mostly.

I have no interest in proper notation nor classical arrangement (it wasn't necessary for learning guitar). And I have no time to waste on stuffy instructors(also not needed for me to learn guitar improv).

I am an above average play-by-ear improvisational guitarist with a sound understanding of basic music theory. I use the CAGED method for guitar and was wondering if there is a similar system for learning piano chords and scales quickly.

A. On the piano, you don't really need a "CAGED" method because the octaves are much easier to visualize. You just have to be able to see the group of two black keys versus the group of three black keys as you move up and down the keyboard.

For example, the note between the two black keys, anywhere on the keyboard, is D.

This is one reason I moved from guitar to piano some years back and stayed with the piano. It was so much easier to visualize every note on the piano, and I'm a visual person.

As far as learning chord shapes, check out http://www.PianoChordFinder.org/ -- this site teaches a three note method for finding 72 basic piano chords.

Original Question

Help With Piano Chords?
Q. How do you play piano chords. I'm given a paper with things like: Am7, Gsus, Fmaj9 and I have to idea how to play things like these. Any help?

A. http://www.pianoworld.com/fun/vpc/piano_chords.htm

Use this website.

Using Am7 as an example, first you must pick the root:

Root: A

Then the chord:

Chord: Minor 7th (Am7)

And it will show you on the piano image above how to play the chord.

It will also show you the various scales of each key, but you wouldn't need to worry about that section when you just want the chord shape.

Hope this helped

Original Question

What are some minor piano chords that sound good?
Q. Scary or haunting that sound proffesional

A. All of them?

The joke is that every minor chord on a modern piano is the same shape (that wasn't always true, by the way). The chords' feeling depends on what key you're in. For instance, in the key of A minor, a C# minor chord would be very surprising (and probably not sound very good), but the key of F# minor, it's pretty tame.

Maybe what you're looking for is a sequence of chords. A lot of Renaissance and Baroque composers liked something called a "lament bass" for a sad sound. Try playing A, G, F, E in the bass. You can put different chords on top of it, like: Am, G, F, E, or even sadder, Am, Em/G, Dm/F, E. Or, for the chord over F, try an F half-diminished 7th--that's an Fm with an Eb added. Experiment with it!

By the way, the "scariest" chords are diminished 7ths. For a "haunting" sound, just play several in a row.
