Teaching myself piano..?

Q. Well, I had actually played for about a year, but my teacher didn't teach me anything. Waste of money and time... Anyways, I'm now teaching myself. I know the notes and a few simple chords. I go online to look up chords so I can memorize. I already play guitar and my dad told me the chords on a guitar are the same as a piano's (as in the notes that make up a chord) I've learned some songs, too. Any tips for me? Thanks and God bless <3

A. You know your notes. Good.

Take a look at the articles on this website http://www.chordmusic.net/index.html

TIP #1: CHORDS - you don't need to look up or memorize chords. I am going to show you how to construct a MAJOR CHORD using a formula, all the other chords are an alteration of or add-on's to the MAJOR CHORD. Here is how you make a MAJOR CHORD using what is called a...

4-3 MAJOR CHORD FORMULA

Starting from C (don't count C) count all the black and white notes stopping at 4, which will be the E note then (don't count E) count all black and white notes stopping at 3, this is the G. (C,E,G = Cmaj or C)

Starting from E (don't count E) count all the black and white notes stopping at 4, which will be the Ab note then (don't count Ab) count all the black and white notes stopping at 3, this is the B. (E,Ab, B = Emaj or E)

Starting from Bb (don't count Bb) count all the black and white notes stopping at 4, which will be the D note then (don't count D) count all the black and white notes stopping at 3, this is the F. (Bb,D,F = Bbmaj or Bb)

Using this formula you can play all your MAJOR CHORDS and...

MINOR CHORDS - flatten or lower the middle note of the Major Chord - (C,E,G = Cmaj or C (C,Eb,G = Cmin or Cm)), (E,Ab, B = Emaj or E (E,A, B = Emin or Em)), (Bb,D,F = Bbmaj or Bb(Bb,Db,F = Bbmin or Bbm)

AUGMENTED CHORDS - sharpen or raise the last note of a Major Chord

DIMINISHED CHORDS - flatten or lower the middle and last notes of the Major Chord

6's, 7's, 9th's, 13's, sus2, sus4, etc require a knowledge of scales and is nothing more than telling you to do something with the specified degree of the scale (add, flatten, sharpen, remove, etc...)

TIP #2: LEARN YOUR MAJOR SCALES. Practice them and get them under your fingers, so that you can play them up, down, inside-out, jumping-around, extending into octaves up and down the keyboard. Here's a quick way to learn all your major scales by using shapes and numbers

To play a Major Scale, you start on any note and move up (to the right) and down (to the left) using this spacing pattern going up W-W-H-W-W-W-H and this spacing pattern going down H-W-W-W-H-W-W ( W = Whole Step, skip one note. / H = Half Step do not skip any notes ).

Here's the C Major Scale

1 = C Whole Step to
2 = D Whole Step to
3 = E Half Step to
4 = F Whole Step to
5 = G Whole Step to
6 = A Whole Step to
7 = B Half Step up to
8 = C

Pay particular attention to the numbers I placed to the left of the above example. You will notice that 1 = C and there is a Half Step between 3 to 4, and a Half Step between 7 to 8. If you let 1 = "any note" i.e., Ab, F, B, C#, etc, and applied the above spacing pattern, you can play all your Major Scales. If you burn this spacing pattern into your mind, and into your fingers, in short order this spacing pattern will begin to jump out at you whenever you looked at a note. You don't need to know the name of the notes except note #1 when you are playing a Major Scale.

You don't need to know your other scales, you don't need to study modes, and you can easily pick out melody lines because all of these are contained within the Major Scale. When a person say a song is in the "Key of ???", what they are saying is that the song is being play in the "??? Major Scale". THE MAJOR SCALE IS THE "KEY" TO PLAYING MUSIC.

Original Question

How do you play piano chords??!!?
Q. I'm a beginner and teaching myself how to play Keyboard/Piano. I've borrowed so many books on the subject but can't figure out piano chords! My understanding is you play 3 notes at once - but its still confusing when looking at people play them on YouTube. Some music have just symbols like E, Dm, etc and lyrics??

Also, I'm trying to play this keyboard version of Hillsong's "This Is Our God" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1jZ1Ux9XOU). The chords listing is:

Intro-verse: E - G#m - C#m - A
Chorus:B - E/G# - A - F#mB/D# - E/G# - A
Instrumental - bridge:E - B - F#m - C#m - A - E (also in video description)

But I can't seem to get around what the left and right hand plays. Plus the video is too fast and unclear to work out the notes :(

Please could someone help me work out what notes to play/how to play them?
Basically, the user gave a list of chord names and I don't know what the left and right hand plays - also on some he doesn't hold 3 down, but alternates between a few!

Thanks

A. To play a piano chord, you need to find out which scale the chord belongs to. For example C chord would belong to the C major scale and Cmin chord would belong to the c minor scale. Lets use C chord as an example. We start off by playing the C note on the keyboard. Then, we miss a white not, but play the next one. We end up having one white note in between the notes we are playing. You should end up playing an E on a C major chord. Then we miss the next note after E, but play the one after that, G. That is a C or C major chord. However, when it comes to other chords we need to take in the key signature of the scale. C minor has an Eb in the key signature, so instead of playing C E G we play C Eb G. I know that probably made no sense so check out this very helpful website. http://www.8notes.com/piano_chord_chart/
I think you would benefit from piano lessons. A tutor can help you play the song and work out the chords. Hope I helped with my long-winded explanation!
