How do I learn to improvise on the piano?

Q. Does it come naturally, after years of playing piano?
How long did it take you to be able to improvise?

A. Nothing comes 'naturally' without work.

If you want to learn how to improvise you have to dedicate some of your practice time to improvising. How do you do it? Lots and lots of experimentation and a solid grasp of music theory. I improvise very well but would never have been able to if I didn't spend about 30 minutes a day for a few years just sitting down and trying to create melodies and harmonizing those melodies from scratch.

The funny thing about improvisation, even in jazz, is that it usually isn't true improvisation. Sure, maybe the note combinations are different and you can definitely add something new each time you sit down and play, but everyone has to have a musical idea to expound on and this musical idea is usually prepared beforehand. The figurations, chords, and arpeggios have certainly been practiced by the pianist beforehand and the pianist usually has a library of techniques and figurations that the pianist uses many times in his improvisation.

So, how do you start? Think of popular musical ideas: Christmas carols, commercial jingles, classical melodies. And then improvise on those themes and motifs. This will require you to build a good ear to be able to play popular melodies in an improvisatory way.

where can I find piano music for Friends by hedley?
Q. I really want to learn friends by hedley on the piano but I can't find the sheet music.
Do you know where i can get free sheet music?

A. Either buy the sheet music or borrow it from the library! As this music is COPYRIGHTED, it is illegal to give out the sheet music for free (In short, if the sheet music is not available as a legal purchaseable sheet music book/single sheet or as a legal purchaseable digital download, then it is not gettable at all). Also, all sorts of fan-made transcripts, tabs, tutorials and sheet music scans of ANY part of the music (tabs, chords, etc.) are equally illegal.

Original Question

Where is the best place to get piano chords for popular songs?
Q. I'm joining a band and I need practice, but I have no idea where I can find chords to songs... Thank you!!

A. First of all, ALL pop music of today is COPYRIGHTED, which means that it is actually ILLEGAL to download/share any of the sheet music for FREE, unless you loan it from the library! So, either buy your sheet music or go check from the library if they're available for you to loan!
