What Instrument should i take lessons for?

Q. My dads signing me up for an instrument lesson this week. I have many choices..But what do you think best fits my description?

â¢I have small hands..(for a 14 year old.) lol
â¢I mainly listen to Pop/Rock (evanescence, three days grace, lady gaga etc)
â¢Im not a quit-er, Yet i want something not to difficult
â¢I wouldn't mind anything unique :)
â¢Something i can sing easily with..

.. P.S. I was thinking Piano or Bass :) lol I know my grammer is terrible, SO SORRY!! N ALSO IM TAKING SING LESSONS :D

A. Take piano over the bass! You'll have more fun learning. The bass is fun, don't get me wrong, but there are less possibilities... just low Plus, with the piano, it'll be easier to learn music theory and such... You know, circle of fifths, the thirty scales, chord progressions, etc... I always play songs by The Beatles, Queen, Elton John, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Avril Lavigne, etc. on the piano. You won't do as much on the bass... I tried playing My Immortal by Evanescence on the piano once when I was in the Guitar Center sight reading from a book.

Yes, learn how to sing! I sing and it's an amazing feeling and a great quality to have. Do it while you're young!

Have fun and good luck! :D

Original Question

What are some things I'm going to need to know about electric guitar?
Q. I play the piano and said when I said I wanted to play the electric guitar, my dad got this big glow in his face. He's going to buy me a guitar and he said that it won't be as easy as I think it will be. He isn't the smartest cookie in the jar and he's been trying to learn the guitar for like 12 years and can't even get it right he said. I do have a talent for instruments and I just want a summary of what I'm getting myself into. Can you please tell me some things I'm going to need to learn to play the guitar? thanks.

A. you're gonna need to know everything! get u a few simple books like "Fasttrack guitar", or "Guitar for dumbies" and learn the stuff in them.. you need to learn chords, harmonics, bends, alternating picking, notes, music theory (you shold have it covered if you play piano)..... it shouldn't be 2 hard since you already play piano

good songs to learn once you learn a few things:

Deep Purple - "Smoke On The Water"
Metallica - "Enter Sandman"
Three Days Grace - "Just Like You"
Three Days Grace - "Animal I Have Become"

a good way to impress your dad would probably be as soon as you pick up a guitar play a few power chords.... which is 2 frets apart on 2 strings.. play them on the top ones (thickest strings).. (idk if you will be able since you've probably never played a guitar but give it a shot)

Original Question

Please help me with my piano?
Q. Help me please! I only have a couple of weeks to learn 4 songs. I can play them in my sleep, but when i start to practice, i muck up the keys and chords. its usually near the end of my practice and on the easiest of ones, like ode to joy, amazing grace, lavenders blue, ect. i have tried everything i can think of, but it hasn't worked. They are for the best of piano teachers, both her and i have high expectations of me, and i wish to impress her. any ideas? Also, i get very nervous playing in front of her or anyone else for that matter. any ideas there would be most helpful as well.

Thank you for your time,
horsequeen78
thank you for your help. another question though, what can i do to calm my nerves when i go to lessons/ play in front of people. if it helps, i am a naturally shy person. thanks

A. Its okay... most pianists feel like this at some stage .... its a part of the learning process! Firstly I have to say please dont listen to the other answer about considering giving up piano.... they have some good practice tips but just because you are struggling it doesnt mean giving up piano is what you should do. If you care about piano enough to go to this trouble, stick with it! Every musician, even the best ones, have problems like this!

From what I can gather your practice sessions are probably too long. try to practice in shorter sessions but more often. it sounds like you're loosing concentration at the end. Sometimes shorter more frequent sessions arent always an option if you've lots of other things going on you dont have time, but practicing even for a few minutes can help. practice before you go out the door in the morning, before you go to bed at night and a really useful one is to practise in the ad breaks of tv programmes. sounds trivial but very effective.

Do force yourself to play the pieces through to the end without stopping to correct mistakes.... this is excellent preparation for concerts. Also however its important to take a problem section and work solidly at it on its own until you can get it right. Use the three time rule: keep working at it untill you can play it perfectly three times in a row. it works magic! :) Also it does sound like the ends of the pieces need more work. start your practice session by working on the ends of the pieces.

About the nerves.... I know your problem, i suffer with you there! I pretty much have zero confidence and self esteem! I've done quite a few piano recitals and competitions, its been hell but i've learned a thing or two.
1. Block out the rest of the room. Do whatever it takes to pretend they arent there.
2. Turn your music into a story. Create a story around each of your pieces, this will help you get lost in the music and relax. For example Ode to Joy could be the story of two long lost lovers re-uniting.. set in a tranquil German forest, use the music to build a storyline and concentrate on making the music tell the tale... it works wonders for your performance too!
3. Dedicate the piece: dedicate the piece to someone you love(or hate!) Pour all the emotion you feel for them into the piece ... concentrate solely on them and remind yourself that your playing the piece for them... If you really put all emotion into it this can be a miracle cure for stage fright!
4. When preparing for concerts etc. record yourself, on your phone or whatever. this is brilliant to see how you'd do in a recital of the piece... you can also play it back and here how your doing! win win!
5. get a family member or friend to listen to you play... this should get you used to playing in concert situations and ease the nerves on the day.

Do whatever it takes to get lost in the piece.... pour as much personal feeling and expression into it as possible... you have to connect with the music. Get lost in it forget the room around you....

Good look with learning the pieces and calming your nerves! you'll do just fine! Dont let a petty little thing like nerves get you down... Some day you'll be an amazing pianist!!! :)
