Q. I really would like to learn how to play the piano, but it all looks so complicated! Especially with all the symbols and stuff. Is there any simple way?
A. First, you don't have to learn sheet music to play the piano. That is a common mistake, but piano can be learn also by ear, with chords or using MIDI.
I am a self taught pianist (professionally) and I don't know how to read sheet music, and I donât want to. I learn by listening to music while trying to play/repeat on the piano; learning the chords and scales (especially the basic ones) on internet; and when I need to learn a song playing note by note exactly as the composer write (like using sheetmusic) I use MIDI.
To show you what I mean with MIDI watch this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LYSVjFU3Jw
Learning chords is very simple and essential because you can learn the harmony of a song just by knowing the chord sequence of that song (example: C, F, G7, C). The melody is another thing you need to learn with another technique.
If you want, you can watch me playing the piano. I record two songs that I learn by ear and upload it on youtube:
Chariots Of Fire http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scc9I9U-1FU
Marriage D'amour (Wedding Of Love) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPMqVFMs2II
Is very easy to learn songs when you know the mayor and minor chords.
Good luck.
Is there a computer program that can tell me what musical notes are used in a song?
Q. Hello! I am trying to play a song I have on the piano, but there are some parts that I can't quite play. I don't have the sheet music for the song, I am playing it by ear; however, some of the notes are too low that I cannot really know what they are. Is there a computer program that can listen to the song for me and tell me what notes are being played at a particular time? Thanks in advance!
A. There are several software programs that claim to be able to do that. You'll want to search for an AUDIO to MIDI converter. However, I have downloaded and tested all of them and not one of them does a very good job. So, it's a technology that is evolving and in my opinion, it's just not ready yet. If you know what key you are playing in, and you have a chord wheel, you can generally figure out what those missing notes are. I play guitar and bass and I write music. I also use the keyboard to figure out a lit of things like melodies and harmonies and chords to go with a lot of the songs I write. I also use it to record various parts of songs. I'm not a keyboard player but, once I know the key, my chord wheel, identifies what chords go well in that key and the bass parts and rhythm guitar parts just fall into place after that. I don't read either music, I play by ear. Now, I can record in midi from my keyboard a melody like and record it into Guitar Pro software and Guitar Pro will write the music for me. So, that program may be of some help to you. You can download it and try it out for free also. You will need an electronic keyboard with a USB midi output on it or a computer with standard midi I/O and midi I/O ports on your keyboard as well.
What instrument would a producer buy as a beginner?
Q. I have FL Studio and I was wondering what I should instrument I should buy to further the beat making process, either a USB midi keyboard or drum pad or something else; which do you think would be suffice for a beginner?
A. Keyboard, since it's much more visual (that's why most orchestral conductors use piano to rehearse even if their 'native' instrument is violin or another one), and you can play chords with one hand and take notes with another.
Most record producers play some keys, even those who aren't consummate musicians as such. You can easily, for instance, tell a singer 'you're doing the wrong note' and show them the right one playing on the piano. It's very convenient.
