474 Things To Do When You're Bored

Original Question

Is singing a talent that you are born with?
Q. I'm not a good singer..at all really. Is it a talent that you are born with? Or is it something that you can greatly improve on, and actually make it so you have a beautiful voice?

Thanks.

A. Yes you can be born as a natural. Not everyone NEEDS lessons to properly sing in key. Some people can just naturally sing in key. I heard plenty of kids (and I have a CRAPLOAD of nieces and nephews) that can just naturally harmonize with a song on the radio or with a piano, and nobody has ever gave them a lesson.

However, by definition, someone who CAN SING is someone who can technically hit notes with their voice. Some people cannot do this. I've heard people who just cannot hit a note to save their life. By "hitting a note" I mean: when you're singing along to a song the notes you are singing are the same ones the singer in the song is singing. If you're singing a different note, but it's in the same key, that's called harmonizing. The question is, are you hitting the note you are trying to sing. If not, then you can't sing. Even if its in harmony, but its not the one you were trying to hit. If you were really trying to harmonize, that's different.

People who cannot naturally sing the proper notes they are trying to sing, cannot sing. You need lessons from a professional. BTW, not everyone who can sing can teach, so pick your singing teachers carefully. Ex rock stars are not teachers. They can probably teach an instrument, but teaching someone to use their vocal chords in a certain way takes someone who's a professional.

Original Question

What are some popular songs that are easy to play on the piano?
Q. I'm good as long as I know the basic chord progression...looking for popular recent music...I know enough to get by and learn it the rest of the way if I know the chords. Doesnt have to be a "piano" song...pearl Jam, Counting crows, radiohead...anything really. Thanks

A. The Black Parade- My Chemical Romance

How to save a life- The Fray

Lady Madonna - The Beatles

Lady Madonna might be quite difficult, but I think it would be very satisfying to play if you can manage it (:
