Q. So I am working on the song "Oceans" by Hillsong on the piano. I have all of the chords down perfectly. But I am only on level 2 of piano and not super advanced. How can I add the melody in between the chords? Do you just have to play around with it and do it by ear?
A. Hi 123. I never have had musical tuition, and yet have sung in-front of ten thousand people. I am male, and so singing in an accapella choir meant that a lot of the time me and a lot of the other men, in the same group, would have to experiment - so that the melody was correct, but not worried about the harmony/ies. Music has such a broad span of boundaries - as a VERY basic example, just think about all of the different scales when played in different keys. A to A flat - four letters difference (f . . l . . a . . t ) , and yet if you listen to the two there is one H#LL of a difference in the sounds you hear!
Music is a weird and wonderful thing! I hope that you reach a level of satisfactory pleasure - knowing that you have given the required answer for you to be able to perform that piece of music as well as you would hope you could. What might sound great to you, however, might not sound even just good to another person1 A great composer does, sometimes, have to just take a bet! Did Beethoven know what the world would think of his music? I presume that you have heard of Pachelbel? Johann Pachelbel I mean - who lived about five hundred years ago. I, along with hundreds (if not thousands or millions) of other think that this one piece is beautiful - yes BEAUTIFUL - and yes classical music took another three or four hundred years before the next good composer came along.
A great composer can sometimes "accidently" come across the right chords etc. I often sing to myself, knowing that it is not totally "correct", but it still sounds OK. Do you not ever do the same? Why not try a G sharp tonight and then tomorrow as a change a C? Even though a different key being used would it not sound better? Who knows - why not experiment? Maybe the best melodies/keys can also be found in the same way - why not get the base line to flow well - like for instance the sops/top line, and then build up round that the rest of the parts?
Technically I have no experience in the terms used, I just KNOW what to sing ( infront of ten thousand folks! ) and yet also LOVE to listen to music - classical through to soft rock - so why not let yourself go? What might you loose by clicking on a "play" icon on a web site? I can promise you that music is a magical instrument, and so what one human loves another might really dislike.
Your melody? Well how would I know it was what I might call a chord until I heard it? Would it not just sound like a terrible noise to me, or even a DIS-chord?
You learn about what you like, and learn to use those sounds.
Richard
