Is G C E G considered a piano chord? If so, what would it be called?

Q. Any other information or tips are also helpful and appreciated. On a side note, what would the best way be to learn and memorize/ understand all the piano chords?

I know that C E G is C major, and E G C is C major 1st inversion, etc. but what would the chord with an extra G be called? (btw, when writing out the chords on top of sheet music...[not as notes in the staff], how would you write in that the chord is an inversion?) Would you just write Cmaj 1st inversion?

A. It could also be written as C/G which means a C major chord with a G in the bass.

Original Question

How do you read these piano chords?
Q. C#m (2 measures) A maj.7 F#m Ab (Ab/C)

How would you play this. Because when I heard a cover of the song on the piano they played these chords but the notes seem to change throughout the song so I got confused. Can somebody tell me how you would play this or tell me how they would transition into notes???

A. C#m means C sharp minor chord which is : C#, E, G#
A maj.7 means A major chord including 7 which is: A, C#, E, G#
F#m means F sharp minor chord which is: F#, A, C#
Ab means A flat major chord which is: Ab, Cb (B), Eb
^ the brackets thing says that you can play this chord ^ or this one:
C major chord which is: C, E, G

Hope this helps!

Original Question

How to play the Ebm/C# chord on piano?
Q. I am trying to learn how to play "Yesterday" on the piano using tabs. I am trying to figure out the chord Ebm/C# since the website (http://www.911tabs.com/link/?4606424) doesn't give me an example. Please help!

A. You may perhaps he confused by the /C#? This way of naming a chord only means that the C# is the lowest note. This would be an E minor chord with a C# in the bass. The C# is the septim (7th), so in effect this is an Ebm7, with the 7 as the bass/lowest note.

Of course, on a piano things are different than on a guitar. On a piano you always have the left hand "available" to play the basses :-)

In case you wonder, your notes in this chord would be A#, F#, D#, C#
