What do you think they would teach in a Piano course in University?

Q. I enrolled in a piano course for non-majors. I am not sure what they would teach us.
I'm pretty scared because I haven't played piano since I was like Grade 2.
I am not a music major but I'd like to learn it again.

A. If this is a piano course for non-majors, it's probably a group piano course, so the professor will start at the beginning. That doesn't mean it will go slowly, but you should be able to keep up!

You'll probably start out naming the keys on the keyboard, and learning the names of the notes on the grand staff. If you want a head start with this, you can try this site: http://readsheetmusic.info/readingmusic.shtml

Then, you'll review rhythm, such as quarter notes, half notes, and whole notes.

You'll start out playing really simple, one hand melodies. Over the course of a semester, you'll learn to play songs that have chords in the left hand and a melody in the right hand, usually.

These courses often take place in a keyboard lab, where all the students sit at a keyboard, wearing a set of headphones practicing half the time.

Oh yeah, if you want some really good practice reading notes, or practicing rhythms, try this website. I send all my students there: http://www.emusictheory.com/practice.html

How to find a diminished 7th chord on the Piano?
Q. Please give me the diminished 7th chord on the piano for C.

Thank you.

A. On C a diminished 7th chord would be

C - Eb - Gb - Bbb (B double-flat, in other words, A natural)

C - Eb - Gb - A natural

A diminished 7th chord is simpyl all minor 3rds (one whole step and one half step each). How it's spelled (the note names) depends on the role in which the chord is functioning

Original Question

Any advice for a violinist trying to learn to play piano?
Q. Mostly when it comes to chords and using both hands to play at a time. Has anybody else on here done this?? Its confusing trying to play with both hands when I'm so used to bowing out just a melody!

A. Cut yourself some slack. You didn't learn violin overnight and you won't learn piano overnight either. The concept of moving independently with the left and the right hand is a skill that your mind might be rebelling against temporarily. Try doing some of these exercises:

1. Opposite scales. Go up with the right hand and down with the left hand. It's fun and it eases your right hand into the idea that it is going to do something besides bowing while your left hand has all the fun.

2. Hold a chord with your left hand while you play melody with your right hand. then reverse the exercise.

3. Play the piece independently, right hand, left hand, and then together very slowly. Slow the tempo down to half and gradually increase the tempo until you are just a little above your target tempo. When you return to the origianl tempo you will be amazed t how easy it now is!

Above all, give yourself time. You need time to make new connections in the brain, time to learn new coordination in your hands, and time to assimilate the whole process. Don't judge yourself by a skill you have already mastered. Try to enjoy the process instead. They are both lovely instruments in their own way, and it takes time to get to know them.
