How do I take Piano or Guitar Chords and make them notes for a Flute?

Q. I have to play songs for the Student Ministry at my church on my flute. My worship leader gave me the Piano chords and i want to learn how to play some Breaking Benjamin stuff too. I have the chords but i have no idea what notes to play. I've messed around with the notes that are in the chords but they don't make sense. Especially the minors and majors..any help??

A. Figure out the key (scale) of the song then play around in that scale. Since you have the piano chords you could simply play the root note of the chord followed by other notes of the scale, or you could walk up or down to the root of the chord using the notes of the scale. You can use non-scale notes also but only in passing.

Really there is no such things as a wrong note. It's just a innate ability you develop to know when to play it and when to release it, e.g. placement and duration of a note. The ability to play your scales really fast, and skip around in them knowing where you are at all times will make it easy for you. Though you must control yourself and not overplay.

Your ear will develop and you'll eventually figure out how to play any melodic line you want or desire to play.

Where can I find the piano notes for Disenchanted by My Chemical Romance?
Q. Where can I find the piano notes (not the chords) for Disenchanted by My Chemical Romance for cheap or free? Also, with the letters, because I'm not great at reading sheet music (I can do it, it just confuses me and I end up getting confused). Thank you!

A. Here's the notes along with the lyrics I had saved on my iPod for almost a year now. They're really some but I can't remember where I got them. There's also these videos on YouTube that teach you how to play it:) just type in disenchanted piano tutorial.

Where do they come up with the notes in a minor pentatonic scale?
Q. I know that if we were in a normal scale that has 7 notes like A major: A B C# D E F# G#. But in a pentatonic scale there is only five notes like E minor: E A D G B. Where do the notes come from? How do they get these notes? Do they take the notes from an E minor chord and you just play all the notes anywhere on the neck? Thanks in advance.

A. This requires a very lengthy explanation. I am going to make it short.

The first generation piano had only white keys, no black keys. Needless to say, there were only majors, no minor. At the time, it sounded very weird. Slowly, they found if 2 keys were eliminated, the music sound more easy listening. So 2 - 1/2 notes were eliminated. What was left were these 5 notes, 1, 2, 3, 5, 6. These 5 notes today are referred to as Major Pentatonic. As music continued to evolve, in classical music, they started to add the chords to the music pieces to achieve a better harmony and minor chords were born. In order to reach a harmony, Blues changed the pattern of the major scale, from 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 to 1, 2#, 4, 5, 6#. Today, this new pattern is known as Minor Pentatonic.

This is why, when we play the Blues, when the 1 chord comes, at soloing, we play the major scale, when the 4 & 5 chords come, at soloing we play the minor scale.

How long should I ideally learn piano chords before moving onto a different key?
Q. I started on the C chords and now I have to learn the Sharps. I don't feel I'm ready to learn these yet until the C chords are sunk well and truly in, That said I don't want to be learning each one for months at a time. I get it, I have to practice but as a rule, how long each day would you suggest a beginner learn his chords for?

Cheers.

A. The only rule is learn the chords until you know them. It might help to remember this:
All major chords are constructed this way: first play the note that is the name of the chord, then go up 4 half-steps (counting all notes, black and white) and play that note, then go up 3 half-steps and play that note. You can actually play the notes in any order and it is still the same chord; whether you play C, E, and G, or E, G, and C, or G, C, and E, it is still C chord, but to find the notes of a particular chord, start this way.
It should not take long to remember what C chord is.
