Original Question

Sammy Nestico "Wind Machine" piano solo?
Q. hello..i need to play an improvised solo at the beginning of "wind machine" but im not exactly sure how to do this. if you are familiar with this piece you will know that there are some strange chord changes to improvise off of. if not the chords are: C6, C#dim, Dm7, Ebdim, Em7, C6, A+7(b9), D9, Fm6, C6.
and then its repeated

A. those are not strange chord changes--they are part of the standard type progressions---use chord scales
c6=chord scale= c d e f# g a b
c#dim= C# D# E F# G A Bb C
dm7= d e f g a c
Ebdim= Eb F Gb Ab A B C D
em7= e f# g a b d
A+7 b9= A Bb C C# D# F G
D9= D E F# G# A B C
Fm6= F G Ab Bb C D

Original Question

what are some good chords for a smooth, slow jazz?
Q. something quite relaxed and laid back, preferably using altered chords as opposed to straight 7th chords. just a few good chords for brainstorming if you know any.

thanks
thanks: ive found that simple maj7th chord progressions give it an almost bluesy-hawiian feel to it.

A. Augmented and diminished 5th intervals do not readily lend them selves to "smooth" or "laid back" Jazz. They are great for building tension towards a resolution or a modulation. The most common "jazz" progression is a standard ii-V-I progression. Very mellow, Very laid back. Using a dominant 9th resolving to a major 9th (I chord) is a very relaxed sound. If you are talking about guitar then your choices are a bit more limited than on a piano due to the amount of voices available while still maintaining the appropriate harmonic structure to keep a cohesive "feel"
EX. key of G
Gma9-Am6-D9-F#m7b5-Gma7 In this example I included a quick detour through the m7b5 chord before resolving the progression. Feel free to omit this or use it as a discretionary substitution for the dominant 9 chord (D9)

I have always found that simple maj7th and maj9th chords have a very "easy listening" appeal. They are instantly recognizable as "Jazz" This is a great study for fingerstyle jazz applications. Feel free to invert the heck out of the chords to see what you can come up with!
