Could some1 explain 2 me how a melody fits into a rock/pop song, (preferably on the piano)?

Q. Okay, so im learning about writing your own songs. My favorite genre is like, rock/pop (beatles, mj pop, not the crap on the radios). Im wondering, how did john lennon, paul mccartney, freddie mercury, some of the greatst songwriters make melody. Did they actually have to make it up and write it, like in "killer queen" "bohemian rhapsody" or "hey jude" or is there a way a melody fits into a song. I do know that the background music usually, in a song is called the accompaniment. But how does a melody fit into it. Can some1 plz explain this to me if you can, and use some music theory if you must, cuz i've been studying music theory 4 a couple years

Thnx

A. When you know the key signature to a song, it can help you in writing a melody and which chord progression to use. Every song has its own melody, so yes you do have to make one up. The chord progression will help you with finding the background music to harmonize with your melody.
