How to write a piano cover of a song?

Q. I know so many songs that I love and think would sound beautiful if there were a piano version of them, and I want to write one. It's been almost five years since I played the piano, and I was never very good at it, and I've forgotten everything I learned. I've tried just pressing random keys on the piano and seeing which ones sound right, but if I hit a wrong note then the melody of the song leaves my head. Any advice?

A. 1. Record the melody ahead of time by singing into a tape recorder.
2. Work out the melody on piano; writing it down in standard notation.
3. Work out the chord structure; write chords over your melody.
4. Arrange the whole of the thing into your final arrangement of piano music.

... 5. Figure out licensing and copyright issues before trying to sell your work.

Original Question

what are the piano chords in the chorus for take a bow by rihanna?
Q. i know the whole song exept for the chorus but the chorus sounds like its only chords.. please help!

A. OK. Explaining music in words is always tricky, so bear with me!

Firstly, the song is in E major (as I'm sure you know). During the chorus, the right hand (RH) is positioned over middle C. The top note in the RH is E, two tones above middle C. The LH is an octave below the RH.

The RH plays chords of three or four notes, the LH just plays the bass note.

The top note of the right hand doesn't move, it stays on the E throughout the chorus, even though the chords change underneath it. So I will give you the chords without this top E (because naming a chord that is B major plus the note E is too complicated).

I am using this notation whenever the bass note is not the same as the chord:
Chord/Bass note.
So C/E means C major with E in the LH.
Am/C means A minor with C in the LH.
Make sense?

So, here are the chords. Each one is played twice, once on each beat.

E | B | C#m | A
(three times)
A/F# | E/G# | A | A
A | E/G# | D | D

Don't forget that the top finger of the right hand stays on E throughout, so for example the notes in the right hand on the B chord are actually F#, B, D#, E (even though it clashes a bit!). Also, the RH copies the melody in places, like on the first chorus when she sings "finally closing". I'm sure you can work those bits out from listening to it.

Good luck!

Original Question

How do I learn sheet music for an electric piano?
Q. I'm getting a new piano and decide to learn sheet music before I play my first piano. So, how do I learn sheet music.

A. For any 'keyboard' or piano, get the basic starter books, CD or DVD learning aids to help you get into it. Chord books and use for left (accompaniment bass chords) and right (right hand melody) hands.

Get to your local music store or piano dealer for such material.

All short of getting lessons or even, from someone who is already into piano playing. Learning to read and write manuscript is complete in its direction, when you can someday accomplish this. There are workbooks on this.

Then you can create your own sheet music anytime, even during a 'doodle'

Taking notes by... notation.
