how do I read the circle of fifths?
Q. I am learning to play the piano, I heard this is the complete chord chart, but I have little idea of how it is actually read. I use the chart that is a circle, with three sets of the acronym CFGDAEB I think Charles father goes down and ends battle( I heard there are others)
A. Ok heres a website with a picture of the circle but i havent read what it says
http://songweaver.com/music/co5.html
Ok so the circle of fifths is the way we relate keys to eachother all revolving around how many sharps or flats the scale of that key has in it.
Starting at C major, which has no flats or sharps, we go up by a fifth (the fifth scale degree in the key of C) to G.
The scale of G major has 1 sharp in it, f sharp.
From the G major scale we go up another fifth to D. The key of D major has 2 sharps in it, f sharp and c sharp. As you keep going up fifths you add another sharp to the major scale each time as depicted in the chart from the website.
After you hit c sharp major, which has 7 sharps in it, you swich over to flats. Or you could look at it starting counter clockwise on the chart in which you go down a fouth each time.
A fourth down from C major is F, and a fith up from f is c so it all makes sense. F major has 1 flat in it this time.
Go down another fourth from F and you have b flat major which contains 2 flats. At the bottom of the chart three scales over lap because they are the same tones and contain the same notes they are just written differently for the purpose of organization.
The way you play the circle of fifths on the piano is really weird cause you have to keep moving up or down an octave otherwise you play off the piano but it makes more sense on guitar where playing around the circle takes 2 minutes to learn
In order to remember it better make up your own funny acronym
What exactly are jazz charts?
Q. There's a contest at my school for music and with the original composition a score or a jazz chart must me submitted. I'm assuming it's just a record of the chords used in the composition(not too in depth) and thats only if it's a jazz composition.
A. "chart" is musician slang for "sheet music"
Typically a jazz chart is a "lead sheet" that shows the melody and chords in concert pitch, but it could also be a complete arrangement with written-out parts transposed for every instrument in a jazz band; i.e. trumpet parts transposed for Bb trumpet, Sax parts in Eb and Bb, piano/bass/guitar in concert key,and a percussion chart that notates the drum kit parts.
