Q. I am going to be the relief pianist for our church worship team. I am learning the songs from sheets that are notated with guitar chords. I can read sheet music, but have been away from piano playing for a long time and some of the chords seem confusing. So I need a description of what, on a keyboard (NOT a guitar!) an A2 chord is and what an Asus is?
A. A2 = A E B C# G
Asus2 = A B E
Asus4 = A D E
I hope they can help you some how
Piano chords to forever and always?
Q. By parachute! I can't find it anywhere! Please and thank you
A. Annah: I don't want to chart the entire song, but I'll get you started. The verse starts like this:
D | A | D/F# | G
D/F# means D with F# in the bass, or D "over" F#.
Here are a couple of tips that will help you decipher pop songs. It's been a trend for a few years for the guitar to play one chord over another, typically a suspended 4th chord over a major chord. In a suspended 4th chord the third is replaced by the 4th. In this song the A major chord is mixed with an "Asus4", that is, the usual A, C#, E may be used by one musician, while another is playing A, D, E.
It helps to understand substitutions. If you're familiar with the idea of relative minors, you know that the relative minor for D major is B minor. Listen to the chord pattern in the song. Can you hear the B minor chord taking the place of the D? It first happens at :36. Also, sometimes the D/F# is replaced by F# minor. They're so much alike you hardly notice, and they're somewhat interchangeable.
Almost the entire song could be played using the four-chord pattern above, except for two places in the song where the pattern changes, and begins with a G chord. This happens at 1:37 and 2:23.
So, most of the song is:
D (or B minor), A (or Asus4), D/F# (or F# minor), and G.
Extra details:
Sometimes the G is a G major 7 (G, B, D, F#).
Sometimes the G is a Gsus2 (G with suspended 2nd, which means the B note is replaced by an A note (G, A, D).
